Spotted by Benchleaks and initially reported on by Wccftech, an HP Omen laptop was discovered on the benchmark site that not only had a latest 12th-gen Intel processor, but also an RTX 3080 Ti mobile GPU. Multiple entries were uncovered, but the biggest discovery was definitely the fact that this laptop has a never-seen-before RTX 3080 Ti inside. Some of the entries simply label the GPU as “NVIDIA Graphics Device” which is a generic placeholder name used for Nvidia drivers. However, the CPU was clearly listed as an “Intel Core i7-12700H” and this was further confirmed by the 14 core, 20 thread topology.

Alder Lake-P i7-12700H

The laptop boasts a cutting-edge i7-12700H processor from Intel’s latest Alder Lake lineup of CPUs. It’s important to note that this is an Alder Lake-P SKU which is different from Intel’s other mobile lineup, Alder-Lake M. Alder Lake-P is better than Alder Lake-M in pretty much everyway since it has a higher rated TDP and support for more features such as PCIe Gen5. The i7-12700H in question here is a capable performer, clocking in at 2.4Ghz base speed and 4.1Ghz max boost speed. And, of course, it features Intel’s big.LITTLE design which takes advantage of a hybrid architecture by combining lower-powered efficiency cores and high-powered performance cores to provide a best-of-both-worlds-type balance. It features 6 Golden Cove performance cores with hyperthreading and 8 Gracemont efficiency cores with no hyperthreading. Hence, the uneven 14 core, 20 thread count. The TDP is rated at 35-45W, but the chip does lose to other, more powerful competitors quite easily.

RTX 3080 Ti Mobile

Regardless, we know that the mobile RTX 3080 Ti will be using a brand-new GA103 GPU which will be paired with 16GB of GDDR6 memory, it’s uncertain at this time whether the memory will be GDDR6X. Through various other reports, we also have everything but official confirmation that this GPU will pack 58 Compute Units, each one of which contains 128 CUDA Cores. If you do some simple math, that works out to around 7424 CUDA Cores. Moreover, it will be clocked at 1395Mhz out of the box. The GA103 GPU is a step down from the GA102 used in the desktop variant of the RTX 3080 Ti. GA103 has less cores and a smaller memory bandwidth compared to GA102. To be precise, it’s limited to only a 256-bit bus in contrast to GA102‘s 384-bit bandwidth. Also, there are fewer cores at work here which will obviously result in a performance dip. The mobile variant of the RTX 3080 Ti, aka the GA103 GPU, should offer performance similar to the desktop RTX 3080.

The Scores

The Geekbench scores show the mobile 3080 Ti as weaker than the mobile RTX 3080 but that’s because of unfinished drivers and the fact that this is most likely a test unit. The RTX 3080 mobile lost in both Vulkan and OpenCL API tests to its younger sibling, the RTX 3080. The laptop managed to achieve a score of 127,392 points in OpenCL and 90,114 points in Vulkan benchmarks, once again, both worse than the score extracted from a RTX 3080 laptop. Therefore, this is bound to change over time and we expect to see some performance numbers that’re actually indicative of the GPU’s real power soon. As mentioned before, the laptop that housed this under-development GPU was an HP Omen 17, featuring 32GB of system memory. Considering the fact that this mobile RTX 3080 Ti will be a GPU rated for a 150-200W TDP, it would need some beefy cooling to keep it under control. And that’s on top of an already toasty 12th-gen Intel CPU.

Release

The three gaming giants, Nvidia, Intel, and AMD are all expected to bring something to CES 2022 in January. For AMD, it will be the reveal of their Ryzen 6000 mobile CPUs, and for Intel, we’re looking forward to mobile Alder Lake chips. But, for Nvidia, it would be most likely the time when they announce and release a few new mobile SKUs of their RTX-30 series. Hence, this would be just in time to disrupt the red and blue team’s announcements and draw the attention elsewhere.
