New Inbox Applications
Inbox applications pertains to apps that come pre-installed with Windows, meaning Microsoft Family and Clipchamp will be installed when you update to the latest Windows 11 Preview build (22572).
Microsoft Family
Microsoft Family is a parental control platform for Windows, and can be accessed through a website or an Android/iOS application. The latest build brings these controls right to Windows 11 through a new app, updated via the Microsoft store. Note – This is only for the Windows 11 Home Edition. Windows 11 Pro users will have to visit Settings > Accounts > Family and download the application via the Microsoft Store.
Clipchamp
Remember Windows Movie Maker? It was a basic video editing software developed by Microsoft, as part of the Windows Essentials software suite. It was discontinued way back in 2014 without a replacement in the pipeline. Last year Microsoft acquired Clipchamp, another user-friendly video editing suite. Microsoft will now include it as part of Windows inbox apps, making it a great replacement for Movie Maker. One caveat however, the application has a paid subscription, starting at $9/month.
Microsoft Search Highlights
Microsoft continues to tweak UI elements to make the general use experience more dynamic. In an older preview build, Microsoft made some changes to the widget board by blending the news feed and widget feed together. Preview 22572 builds on that work and introduces a new search highlight feature. After the update, the search tab will regularly feature new content and interesting moments, like holidays, important dates or ‘fun illustrations’. The experience also gets more personalized when the user signs-in with a school or work account. Microsoft Search can be used directly to go through ‘your organization’s files and contacts’, and also explore suggested people and other files. Additionally, users have complete control over Seach highlights, and the feature can be enabled/disabled from the “Show search highlights” tab, in Settings > Privacy & security > Search settings.
