Following suit to the demands of the UK government, Blizzard decided to put a halt to loot box sales for good now to make sure that the UK government doesn’t dabble in Blizzard’s affairs which honestly, wouldn’t be a pleasant experience for them or any gaming company for that matter.
Won’t overwatch sell loot boxes?
Keeping the warning of the UK government in mind, Blizzard announced that Overwatch would seize all sales of loot boxes at the end of August. It was in a blog post that detailed the Overwatch Anniversary Remix Volume 3 event, that the company discreetly stated that they would no longer be selling loot boxes as of August 30. The event mainly aims to let players acquire skins that they previously couldn’t, considering the fact that Overwatch has seasonal skins that can be obtained through loot boxes. The skins are then permanently locked and are unattainable once the event comes to a close. This is good news for players that were unable to acquire their desired skins or joined the Overwatch bandwagon a bit too late. Overwatch 2 is expected to launch sometime soon, on October 4, 2022, as a free-to-play game. The news comes as a shock to many players because the original Overwatch had to be purchased at the Blizzard Website for a full 60-dollar price tag and then later for 30 dollars. The game will definitely include the traditional seasonal structure along with a battle pass system, which wasn’t featured in the original game. But as stated earlier, loot boxes are out of the question and won’t be featured in Overwatch 2 Maybe Blizzard will include another method for players to acquire skins. Players might have to buy skins directly from the store, or they may drop randomly as skins and weapons did in games like Team Fortress 2 and CSGO. But what will happen to the old unopened loot boxes that are stacked up in players’ accounts? Blizzard has that already covered. The Overwatch Commerical Lead, Jon Spector, stated in an interview that unopened loot boxes would be automatically opened, and the items would be deposited into the players’ inventory. In addition, credits, OWL tokens as well as competitive points will be carried over to Overwatch 2. But that’s not all. He added: So, Loot boxes that we all knew and loved in Overwatch will be discontinued soon enough. They were pretty expensive but the incredible collection of cosmetic items at every seasonal event did indeed spice things up. Now Blizzard has to find another way to satisfy.
