After upgrading to Windows 10 May 2020 Update, several Google Chrome web browser users reported their Sync paused randomly and the cookies were automatically deleted after every reboot. After receiving the complaints, Google attempted to work with Microsoft and find the problem, but was not able to offer a solution. However, a user has reported a working fix and several others have indicated the fix works.
S4U Scheduled Task Caused Google Chrome To Halt Sync And Deleted Cookies After Every Restart?
According to the user, a scheduled task called “S4U” is responsible for the erratic behavior of the Google Chrome web browser in Windows 10. For the time being, users who are suffering from ‘Sync not working’ or ‘Cookies deleted after every reboot’ issues in Google Chrome, must take steps to stop all running instances of S4U Scheduled Task in Task Scheduler, a small applet within Windows 10. According to Microsoft’s official documentation about the S4U Scheduled Task, “Task_Logon_S4U takes advantage of service for user (s4U) logon to run the task on behalf of the specified user, but without having to store password. Since the Task Scheduler runs within the local system account, it can create an s4U login session and receive a token that can not only be used for identification, but also for impersonation on the local computer. There could be multiple instances of Task scheduler, and users need to disable all tasks that relate to the S4U Scheduled Task.
Microsoft Indicates It Is Aware Of The Problem And A Fix Could Be Released Soon:
Quite a few users of the Chromium Bug social platform have confirmed that disabling all S4U Scheduled Tasks from Task Scheduler ensures Google Chrome’s Sync remain functional and the Cookies are not deleted. Microsoft Edge developer Ericlaw indicated the company is looking into a solution. In the feedback hub related to the issue, Microsoft added it is digging into the feedback. “After upgrading to Windows 10 version 2004, Windows is no longer remembering my credentials/passwords in apps across the System (including the browser) and continually prompting me to sign in again”. It is important to note that only a few Windows 10 v2004 users have faced the problem and reported the same. It is not a widespread issue. Still, if any Windows 10 and Google Chrome users are affected, they can disable the S4U Scheduled Task to see if that solves the issue with logins and Sync issue of Google Chrome.
